Celebrating the Birth of our Savior!

Week of December 17-20

Book of the Week  - Jacob's Gift (repeated) and various books of the Nativity
Sound of the Week - review of letters to date
Moms of the Month - Jennifer Stephens and Allyson Horton

Message from our Headmaster:

The tragic shooting in Connecticut today calls us as believers to prayer for the overwhelming grief that now abides there, and to a heightened awareness of our need to ramp up our actions to secure our own students' safety where that is humanly possible.  Our prayers cross into the realm of supernatural security as well.

May we all work together to do the little things, no matter how inconvenient, to be diligent in our observations, careful in our driving, and bold in our initiatives to confront and report potential breaches in security.  As a school administration, we recommit to do all we can, and trust we will all do our best together to make Perimeter School a safe place for our covenant children and teachers. Thanks for your prayers and support.

Bobby Scott
for all our staff

Please know that though Rhonda and I will pray fervently for the families of Sandy Hook Elementary, we will not discuss this tragedy with your children at school.  I have spoken with a couple of you this weekend and understand that this is your desire.   As I have told my own children that attend PCS - Perimeter Church is a safe place, we have security present from 6:30 a.m. - 11:00 p.m. and we do have a emergency plan in place.

For the children's sake, we plan to keep things focused and joyful on the Birth of our Savior.  Please contact us with any concerns.

Thursday December 20th, Service Project, 8:30 a.m.-12 noon
Your children should be dropped off at regular time.  Our class will be serving the Security Staff at Perimeter Church.  Our lead parents have planned a wonderful morning that will encourage and bless.  Thank you Allyson for your Friday email.  You will receive email from Alex letting you know which items to send for goody bags that are being made for the security staff.  If possible, let's plan to do a "few minutes before noon pick up" since the entire school will be released at noon.

We love your children incredibly and count it a blessing to share in this special week with your families.  Praying that we can be a tiny part of encouraging their love of our Savior that came to earth so that we might know Him.  Rhonda and Kay

G Week - Jacob's Gift

Week of December 3-6

Happy First Day of December!  We hope that you will enjoy the Countdown Chain and Scripture Calendar (that can be used with your child's chain)...as you celebrate the birth of Jesus over the next month.

Most of the kindergarten teachers sent home letters detailing the reasons that we only discuss the birth of Christ in Celebration of Christmas in our kindergarten program.  Honestly, we know your hearts, Christ is your family's focus for the season and we know that you will encourage your child to keep this focus when they are at school.  We will say, "we have so much to talk about Jesus' birth that we don't have time to talk about anything else at school".....so no discussion of Santa, elves, etc. at school.

You will be receiving a special invitation from Annily this week inviting you to a Christmas Caroling party that she has planning for the last month.  For planning purposes...put December 17th on your calendar for a Christmas Caroling and birthday party for Jesus...with everyone bringing a gently used or new toy, coat, etc. that will be donated to those in need.  The party will be at Mrs. Lee's (close to school/Church) and will begin around 6:00 on the 17th.  Please bring siblings!

Thank  you Sandra and Kevin Jones and Amberly Deavours for being our awesome November Parents of the Month.   You went above and beyond.  Thank you for the supplies, food, reading, helping with feast, etc. etc.

As you have heard, our class will be the animals of the Nativity for the Christmas pageant.
You will receive a photo of your child's costume this week.  Also, we will record our version of the "Friendly Beasts" and send to you by email so that you can download on your computer for practice at home.  Please make plans to attend our Christmas Pageant on December 19th at 11:00 in the Church Fellowship Hall.  Invite grandparents, aunts, cousins and friends.  We always have a packed house.  It's wonderful.  My in-laws drive from North Georgia every year to see our 13 minute long pageant.  It's one of their favorite holiday traditions.

We love your children.  Have a blessed Sunday and first week of December.

Parents of the Month - Kevin and Sandra Jones and Amberly Deavours

We look forward to seeing your children tomorrow morning, bright and early and hearing all their wonderful Thanksgiving experiences.

Thank you to Kevin and Sandra Jones and Amberly Deavours for being a part of our Thanksgiving feast last Tuesday.  Thanks also to Gomo, Annily's grandmother for helping with our Thankful Trees and reading our book of the week.

Please see a photo of our cute little Indians to the right.

We jump right back into school tomorrow with our book of the week, The Ox Cart Man which is another wonderful Newberry winner written by Donald Hall and illustrated by Barbara Cooney.

I responded to several emails about our narration of last week.  The students only heard the book The Three Pilgrims one day in class but most were able to take home to read with parents.  We also read the book Squanto as a supplement and the children were especially attentive.  Please feel free to have your child narrate either of the two books.  The last two years the majority of the students narrated and illustrated Squanto.

We begin our practice for our Christmas pageant tomorrow!  We are thrilled that the Lee-Jernigan students will be featured as the "animals" of the nativity....sheep, cows and donkeys...(and Mrs. Jernigan and Mrs. Lee are thrilled that we already have all adorable costumes from the past two years that were made by moms from these classes).  We will let you know by the end of the week of any special socks, etc. that the students will need to wear.  Also, we plan to send a recording of the song through a blog link as soon as our song plans are finalized.    Please put this on your calendar!  December 19th....it's precious, a can't miss!

Important information:

We will study the first Thanksgiving the next two days and will attend a feast as Native Americans on Thursday at 11:00.  There is nothing to prepare at home.  The teachers are providing food and the costumes are our vests that we made last week for "V" week (with feather headbands that we will make on Tuesday morning).

Looking forward to Annily's grandmother "Gomo" coming tomorrow morning (Monday at 9) to help with our Thankful Trees.  Trees will come home on Tuesday at noon.  We will send several extra leaves to fill in and place as a family.

Veteran's Day at PCS was the BEST ever!  Thank you to Annily's and Ryan's grandfathers for coming early Thursday morning and sharing about their lives in the military.   How awesome it was to have these grandfathers to read the book of the week.   Thanks also, to Andrew C.'s grandfather for stopping by to meet the class.   Every detail of the program was powerful...seeing these grandfathers who served our country... stand during Armed Forces Medley while their grandchildren looked up at them was amazing!

Mrs. Jernigan and I both are incredibly thankful for our special class this year.  We pray that your Thanksgiving is rich with family time, great memories and real time to praise our Heavenly Father (as a family) for the richness of His continued Blessings!  You and yours are loved!

"V" is for Veteran

Week of November 12-15

Sound of the Week - V
Book of the Week - All Those Secrets of the World
Habit of the Month - Courtesy
Parents of the Month -Amberly Deavours and Kevin and Sandra Jones

This is a wonderful week in Kindergarten as we study what is means to be a United States Veteran.  We will study the different branches of the military and talk about the commitment and sacrifice in serving our country this way.

Our book of the week, All Those Secrets of the World, by Jane Yolen is a bittersweet tale of a child's impressions of her father's departure to war and then the conflicting emotions when he returns.  The story is set in WWII.  The illustrations are beautiful.

Please join us on Thursday, November 15th at 9:30 a.m. for our PCS Veteran's Day Celebration.  Every year, this day is one of the most memorable of the school year.  On Thursday morning, the auditorium will be filled with our students, parents, teachers, and administrators and hundreds of  Veterans!  Please attend on Thursday morning if you possibly can.

We look forward to having Annily's grandfather (Amberly's dad) who is a Veteran to read on Thursday morning and hoping that Ryan's grandfather (Anne Marie's dad) can be a part of our Thursday morning also.  We will touch base with both of you on Monday.

Veteran's Day is CHAPEL DRESS!  WE WILL SEND SEVERAL REMINDERS!

Late Start on Wednesday, will send reminder.

Parents, thank you for support and prayers last week.  We finished "W" week well!
See photo of Wacky Wednesday as we read our Dr. Suess book under the table....how wacky!

It's November!  Before we know it, we will celebrate Thanksgiving and the Christmas holidays.  Please be aware of the following dates as you mark your calendar for this month
and next.

WE DO HAVE SCHOOL ON TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 6TH (ELECTION DAY)...UNLIKE LOCAL PUBLIC SCHOOLS.

Wednesday, November 14th - Late Start

Thursday, November 15th - Veteran's Day at Perimeter School - 9:30 a.m. in Main Auditorium.   This is one of the most memorable days at our school.  Our school hosts hundreds of American Military to say thank you for their service.  Invite any service people that you know. Please check out the Veteran's Day information on the school website.
Students will wear chapel attire this day.  Please join us if you can.  Fantastic morning.

Wednesday-Thursday, November 21 and 22 - Thanksgiving Holidays
The children will participate in a Thanksgiving Feast on Tuesday, November 20th.  Our class will dress as Indians and will make our costumes at school (nothing to do at home).  The teachers provide the food and our awesome Parents of the Month will help to host that morning.

Christmas Pageant - Wednesday, December 19th
It's precious, lasts about 20 minutes (after working for a month to rehearse) and it a MUST for parents and grandparents.
Probably around 9:00 a.m. but will get info to you ASAP.
We have cow and sheep costumes from past two years but might need to spruce up or add to...

Service Projects - Thursday, December 20th
Teachers will be a part.  Parent led.

This week we will travel to the African Savanna as we study the letter Z and read a beautifully illustrated book, Here on the African Savanna.  Our Parents of the month will provide a traditional African meal of beans and rice on Thursday after we watch a slide show presentation of Mrs. William's mission trip and safari to Tanzania.

Please continue to encourage your children to practice their letters on the chalkboards at home.  Mrs. Jernigan and I are creating practice sheets for letters and numbers that students have studied to date.  Look for these to come home in the future.

Thank you also for your wonderful effort and encouragement to your children with their Book of the Week Journals.  Many of the kids are becoming quite competent with recalling the stories and illustrating.  We love reading these aloud on Monday mornings.

"W" Week - Warm as Wool and Wacky Wednesday

Sound of the Week - W
Book of the Week - Warm as Wool
Moms of the Month - Alex Holck and Samantha Griggs
Habit - Attention

TEMPERATURES DROP TONIGHT.  PLEASE SEND A JACKET FOR YOUR CHILD THIS WEEK.  WE WILL PLAY OUTSIDE UNLESS IT IS RAINING HARD.  THANKS.

Speaking of cold children, our book this week Warm as Wool, by Scott Russell Sanders, is a wonderful story set in 1803, and describes the pioneer life of  Betsy Ward and her three children.  After traveling by covered wagon to the woods of Ohio, she seizes a chance to buy eight sheep.  Raising sheep and children proves to be quite difficult.  This great story of a pioneer mom providing for her family spurs much great conversation with this age group.  Moms, prepared to be blessed by a page that the students will complete about the wonderful ways that your provide for them.

Looking forward to a full four-day week of great activities with the sound "W".  Kindergartners commonly confuse the sound of  "W" so it will be "w"onderful to go ahead and hit this one head on.

What a blessing it was to meet with most of you last week in our parent conferences.  It is evident that the hearts of your children are your priority.  Rhonda and I both are privileged to be a part of the life of your family for this school year (and longer).

"W" Week includes WACKY WEDNESDAY (based on the Dr. Suess book of the same name) the children will arrive to a classroom turned upside down, the calendar numbers in the wrong order..just like the book.  Yes, we know that this is the same day as Trick or Treating but we are moving ahead as our curriculum is planned.  At PCS, we don't mention the October 31st holiday as many families respectfully don't participate.  So, no costumes or extra treats.  However since it is Wacky  Wednesday your child may wear mismatch socks, crazy hair or even their shirts turned backwards (which we would have done even on a Wednesday during "W" Week - Halloween or not0.    We will be having Waffles with Whipped Cream around 9:00 a.m.   Whew!  This group of kids will eat anything put in front of them, so plan on a little protein for the early morning, first breakfast before school.

You should have received information about Veteran's Day Service in early November.  Let us know if you need extra stars for Veterans.

This is the last week of a very busy month and we want to say a huge "thank-you" to Alex and Samantha.  You both have gone above and beyond with many extras and it has been a joy to have you in the classroom.  We will send November Mom of the Month info out in the next couple of days.

We enjoyed having Walker's grandmother read this week and have included a picture.  She was so thoughtful to bring each child a pumpkin treat that they brought home in the backpacks on Wednesday.

Have a Wonderful, not so Wacky Week (especially Wednesday).

We love your children.

The Great Kapok Tree - Letter K

Book of the Week - The Great Kapok Tree
Sound of the Week - K
Habit - Attention
Moms of the Month - Samantha Griggs and Alex Holck

Hope you had a relaxing three day weekend!

Looking forward to another action packed 3 day week in kindergarten.  Our book this week, The Great Kapok Tree, is full of colorful, rich pictures that depict the beauty of God's creation in the Rain forest.  We do feel that we need make our parents aware that this book is written from a secular/save the earth perspective.  We think the book itself is fine, but there is a letter at the back of the book that reads "save mother earth".  We plan to black the mother earth in this letter.  We know the author writes from the secular perspective of saving what we have, and Genesis 1 shows us that God asks us to "care for what He has given." Both of our verses this week are from Genesis...God made the plants and the animals....all of them AND God set man over His creation to care for it.  We believe the book is valuable but didn't want this book to come home without explaining our concerns.  Please let us know if you would like to discuss.

Ask your child on Tuesday afternoon to show you how to make a Karate K!

Beginning this week, it would be helpful for children to practice their letter of the week on their chalkboards that we brought as gift to home visits.  Practicing 6 or so a couple of nights a week would be appropriate.

Thank you to Alex Holck for helping out with Vision and Speech/Screenings and in the classroom last week.

We enjoyed meeting Gage's grandparents last Monday morning, (and took pictures that I will add soon).  His grandmother loved introducing and reading Mike Mulligan and the Steam Shovel.

Also, thank you Samantha Griggs for reading last Thursday.

Looking forward to conferences next week.  Please refer to conference schedule email sent last Wednesday.

"S" Week with "Max and the Steam Shovel"

Week of October 8-11
Sound of the Week and Book of the Week - "S" and Max and the Steam Shovel
Mom of the Month - Alex Holck and Samantha Griggs

A huge thanks to Kelly Gordon, Sandra Jones, Kelly Porter and Alex Holck for a great
Service Project Day.  The children were in great hands and we know the fireman felt very
loved and appreciated!  Hoping to post pictures later this week.  Please send.

We enjoyed Cynthia Rylant's book When I Was Young in the Mountains last week.  It was so
special to have Patty Green, Walker's grandmother, come and read this book and then tell
us about how things have changed since she was young.  The kids were very interested to
hear that there were no TVs and cell phones years ago.  (see photo)

This Week will include sponge painting, scribble art, Marching to Sousa (our kindergarten
composer), slithering, stomping, swaying, skipping, swinging and many other great S activities.

This weeks book, Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel, is another outstanding Caldecott
award winner.  Be sure to check out ALL of Virginia Lee Burton's books.

We have returned from Chattanooga where we attended a Childlight - Charlotte Mason
Conference feeling very inspired to continue the wonderful Mason-based experiences
that our school encourages.
Email for Conference Sign up preceded this blog update.  Look forward to meeting with you.

"Y" Week and Service Projects!

Week of October 1-3
Sounds of the Week - Y
Book of the Week - "When I Was Young in the Mountains"
Moms of the Month - Alex Holck and Samantha Griggs

Wow!  What a wonderful trip to the Apple Orchards last Thursday.  Thank you Alex Holck for doing an "a"mazing job coordinating the trip.  The students will bring their Seasons of the Apple Tree handmade book home on Tuesday.  How special that they we able to see the Summer tree in real life last Thursday.  See photo to the right.  Hope to add more very soon.

Looking forward to a short, but rich "Y" week.  Our book, "When I Was Young in the Mountains" by Cynthia Rylant is a wonderful story of "the way it used to  be".  We are excited to have Walker's grandmother read on Monday and are hoping that she won't mind  sharing a little about the way things were she was young.  The students are shocked to learn that we grew up with no cell phones, only 4 Atlanta television stations, no iPads and no microwave
ovens.

General Store on Tuesday at 9:00 a.m.  - The 6th graders at PCS have just finished reading the book As the Red Fern Grows and have invited us to be a part of a General Store (which totally supports the setting and time of Book of the Week).  The 6th graders will be dressed in early 1900's costume and will sell small General Store type items.  They will also set up games such as marbles and pick-up-stix.    Your child can purchase all that is needed for 1.00.  Most items are 5-10 cents.  Our 4th grade Partner class is going to attend with us to help us count money and make good choices. Bring a 1.00 this day or if you forget, Mrs. Jernigan and Mrs. Lee  will have some to share.  The proceeds from the store benefit the Guatemalan Teachers Mission Trip.

Thank you to Kelly Gordon, Alex Holck, Kelly Porter and Sandra Jones for planning an awesome Service Project Day for Wednesday.  Please refer to email from these moms as to items to bring and plans for the day.  Please pray for the PCS teachers who will be attending a Charlotte Mason conference in Chattanooga on Thursday and Friday.

Remember PCS will be closed on Thursday and Friday this week as teachers and administrators are away at conference.

You will be receiving an email soon that will list sign up times for our October 24th conferences.  Please check you calendar and reply by Friday, October 5th.  Mrs. Jernigan and Mrs. Lee will be meeting with parents together for these October conferences.

Moms of the Month - Kelly Gordon and Lisbeth Fay

Thank you to our wonderful September Moms of the Month for all of your generous blessings to our classroom this past month.  We have enjoyed the wonderful Topic of the Week library books, your time in the classroom, special snacks, Nature Walks and many extras.  You blessed us incredibly.  Both Allie and Andrew love having their parents as a part of their school day.

This Week:
Tuesday, 25th - Making apple pies in class this day.  Thank you to Kelly Gordon and Lisbeth Fay for providing all needed supplies for this favorite activity.

Wednesday, 26th- Late Start!  Students may be dropped off at 9:00 a.m.

Thursday, 27th -Class trip to Reece Apple Orchards.  Thank you Alex Holck for making all plans for this special trip.  If you are not one of the families meeting at school, then plan to meet us at the Orchards at 10:00 a.m.  Please send sack lunch for your child to eat at the Orchards or in the car on return trip home.  Please have your children wear play clothes and tennis shoes.

Some fun things that we will be doing with "A" this week.
Alphabet activities, animal charades, fingerprint ants and our own Book of Seasons of the Apple Tree

The Book of the Week - How to Make an Apple Pie and See the World
by Marjorie Priceman
This is another favorite in my own household.  It is a delightful, creative and humorous adventure that your children will enjoy for years to come.  We'll use the recipe at the back of the book to make an apple pie on Thursday.  Ask your child to trace the locations of the book on a world map this week.

Last Week:

We received a couple of questions from parents about the notes that came home from another student in their backpacks!  These notes were from our Class Partners from Ms. Amor's 4th Grade Class. Our school is making special efforts this year to return to the wonderful tradition of giving each K-3 grade student a special partner in an older grade.  We are sorry that we did not notify you about this special meeting.  We actually did not learn that we were meeting our partners until the night before.  Our plans are to meet with our partners monthly.  They will read to our class, help with special Christmas crafts, attend our pageant.  We will share monthly blessings with our partners as well (which will be prepared at school).   Please see photos on right.  Gage, your partner is Sam Aycock.  He looks forward to meeting you soon.

The Make Way for Ducklings Lapbooks were sent home on Thursday.  Thank you for your kind comments.  Rhonda and I loved creating a "lap book" with the students.  This type project was "the thing" when we received our Education degrees in the 80s..we laughed that many of the parents in our class were young enough to remember having made their own. We will plan to make another very soon.

This week we will introducing our Artist for the Year (in Kindergarten), John James Audobon.  We learn that he is a student and lover of nature and came to be known as the "man who drew birds".  We will take a good long look at his mallard duck picture.  We will also do our very first picture study  of McCloskey's drawing of ducks on Thursday and then a reproduction drawing.

"C" Week with Eric "C"arle and "C"aterpillars

Week of September 10-13

Parent Meeting - Curriculum Night and Prayer, this Tuesday night, September 11th at 6:15 p.m. in our classroom.  As Mrs. Jernigan and I realized that we will not meet with parents in our class again until January, we asked special permission to have our own class meeting (not a big grade-wide curriculum meeting).  We will touch on curriculum and Habits and then have time for prayer.  Please email us with curriculum questions, or specific concerns.

A huge thank you to our moms of the month, Kelly Gordon and Lisbeth Fay,  for joining us on Thursday for our  trip to Italy with Papa Piccolo and other wonderful "P" activities. Thanks also to the parents that attended our first Chapel Service on Wednesday. The extra laps and arms were needed!

Looking Forward to "C" Week as we study the well-loved Eric Carle book, The Very Hungry Caterpillar.   Our moms of the month have brought in many outstanding library books that will help supplement our book studies this month.  If you have any Eric Carle books, puzzles or games at home, this would be a great week to pull them out and enjoy them as a family.

NATURE WALK - Thursday, September 14th.  Weather is supposed to be beautiful this week.  Please have your child wear tennis shoes with uniform shorts, pants or skort.  We will have our snack on Nature Trail.  Please send water bottle!

We look forward to our special readers this week, Walker's grandfather,  Don Horton,          on Tuesday, 11th at 10:45 and Anne Marie Stanley, Ryan's mom on Thursday, 13th at 10:45!

Moving to LInes!
We have been impressed with the grips and letter formation of my class this year.  This week, we will  to move our letters to "lines" and all students did very well.  Contrary to what we mentioned at the first class meeting,  we believe it is appropriate that we go ahead and move to "lines" in our Handwriting Without Tears.  I know it doesn't sounds like a big deal, but to a kindergartener, it really is a big step.

Have a blessed Week!
